Vitral. Only YOU Hotel Atocha. MDF22.
25-meter-long hand-printed textile mural, 2022.
The sketch I made to use as a guide during the printing process.
VITRAL is a textile artwork. It consists of a 1.6-meter-wide by 25-meter-long cotton fabric piece, entirely hand-printed using six different geometric units, mostly measuring 24 by 24 centimeters. This installation was created to emphasize the artistic nature of textiles, fully detaching them from any functional purpose, becoming an exclusive object of aesthetic expression.
We have grown accustomed to textiles, as a medium, being tied exclusively to other art and design disciplines, relegated to a supporting role. However, textiles inherently contain an array of expressive possibilities that allow them to stand alone as the core of an artistic creation.
This is the aim of VITRAL: to work with the essential qualities of textiles and place them front and center as the sole foundation of the artwork.
Visually, the piece draws inspiration from the stained glass windows of Gothic cathedrals, where shapes and colors are orchestrated into an exceptionally rich and complex aesthetic system, pushing the boundaries of spatial perception.
This historical reference also nods to the artisanal techniques used to create the piece. Hand-printed, shape by shape and color by color, it is the product of a slow, thoughtful creative process.
As an installation, the work necessarily engages in a dialogue with the space for which it was created: the inner courtyard of the Only YOU Hotel Atocha. In this case, the height and proportions of the building have reinforced the initial inspiration for the project, transforming it into a kind of contemporary cathedral—a fitting metaphor for a work with the characteristics of VITRAL.
